Random Displays

»» A mother, lunchboxes and woolly hats in hand, marching onwards towards the school gates. Phone cradled between shoulder and ear, hair tickling a nose which is red and full of cold. Harried, flustered, juggling, terse. Behind her a few feet back, her little girl stumbles and falls; tiny, tights-clad knees connecting roughly with concrete. A gasp and the threat of tears; blue eyes fixed on an adult back. But before the tears can fall, before the wail can begin, a big brother with curly hair and a lopsided striped school tie. Scooping her up, setting her on her feet, dusting the dirt and leaves from her legs and bending to tie her laces. He steps back, admires his handiwork, takes her hand and they gallop after their mother. She missed it, this display. But I didn’t. I didn’t.
